Web site development thoughts- chronicled

It’s Jan 8, 2018. I’ve done very little on this project since sept as my creative time has been writing a book.
* I still like the idea – provide our insights, methods, texhniques and research on the topic.
* Don’t make it a “social” site. People can comment on posts, but – at least initially – not write their own.
* But they can send me ideas to pursue – or their own posts which I would vett and publish. The writeit will have a email link and a post link – both will go to me and not be published till I OK it. All posts will be attributed to the poster, and I need the email address of the poster which will be used only by myself in regards to the site.
* I think the categories are too complex. They are needed if the site is to be a research site. Which it might become. But for now most people I think would just scan thru the pages.
* The page – I’ve tried a number of approaches with a nice heading, pictures, and the like. I think the best approach will be to:
a. Makes a narrow, colourful header saying DIYAging levering the power of age to age gracefully at home.
b. Make the categories even fewer – like
c. All posts should have a picture and it should be smaller than current. (It’s already just 200×200 but it looks much larger???)[metaslider id=512]

If I can make a default font that is larger I’ll do that.

Role Models: Describe, tell stories about people who have remaned active and thriving to advanced ages.
Staying Relevant: It’s always difficult to be “relevant.” But, for most of us after busy careers, our contacts go stale, our interests change and we don’t keep up in our former fields, and the grey hair syndrome starts to set in – people look through you rather than at you.
What steps do you take to enhance your relevancy (in whatever areas are important to you) or do you care?

Structuring the menu- organizing, adding images, pages posts

1. Have tabs open for menu: dashboard > appearance > menu
pages: dashboard > pages > new
2. Images – have 48×48 image for the category being wored on.
3. Add a page by cloning the home page (choose pagebuilder, layouts, clone, ), or other page simililar to what is desired. ie it has the masthead menu with logo, the first row with the search and print wichits, the third row with the title of the page (ie category), and the third row with the post loop)
4. Update the page – The title line – have the category name and tag line.
Include a text blurb about the category if desired, or a link to a post about it.
5. save- update-publish – make the changes stick however depending on where in the process.
6. Go to Menus. The page just completed will now be showing in the list of possiblie menu items. Select it, and clickk add to menu.
7. Go to the menu item and open (down arrow on right), and add the 48×48 image, the
in the title, the tiktle below image checked, and review for other settings.
8. Save it, and review. Make any needed changes.
9 The idea is that each page looks like all the others in terms of masthead, search, and footer. But content is different.

Over all sequence.
1. determine minu item name, find an image, convert to 48×48 and black and white (unslpash, my photos, web, elements (artist water color posterize or outline); Make a page; Add the page as a menu item.

Difference between a page item for the menu and a category for menu item:
It seems like the page gives more control. BUT, I’m not sure what picking a category link actually does. So I should check that out .

To change/edit the Menu loco/picture
Dashboard -appearance customization -theme setting – logo

Interrelation of the heading, the masthead and the menu
I’m not yet clear, but it seems they re independent and you choose the one you want. For diyAging I am using the men which has a place for a logo, which I am using for the site name. The menu items can each have a picture, and a hover picture. A search bar can be included- or not.
Logo size 300×140 font (franklin gothioc heavy??? can’t remember – I tried quite a few.)

Colors for diyAging – recommended for senior vision ease.
Page: white f0f0f0
Text: black
Blue – 25 35 220
Purple: 20 80 220

Menu edit
Dashboard – Appearance – Menus – (Also, a slightly different presentation on the left side bar Appearance – custimization – menu ) It appears the Vantage theme is using the first pproach in general.

Add Categories
Dashboard – Posts – categories

Remove search bar from the menu
Dashboard -Appearance -custimization -theme -Settings -Navigation -Search in menu (also the smart phone menu can be added or deleted here.)

Making a image for the menu- 48×48. FZind a suitable image on Unsplash (all images public domain); wikimedia- most public domain; my photos; the net (use as basis to modify )
Copy the imageuse the screen copy, open elements and do new image from copy. Enhance (lack and white, artistic colored pencils; posterization line outline); alter backgrounds. Crop to 48×48, change zie to 48×48, save to diyAging photo file on the lap top. Up load to ditAging media.

Modify the affiremations (I need to check – Dashboard-plugins? hello dolly; edit? change the sentences. Each line is one item to be displayed.

How to clone a page:

Clone pages: Start a new page. Start Page Builder if not started yet. In the Page Builder top bar is a icon called Prebuilt Layouts. There you’ll find a list of the pages(under clone?) you’ve built already. Clone desired and rename and save as a draft.

Text to use as a filler while developing a page:

How to make a boolean retrieval using query builder.
cat=3,-18 comma for OR, Plus for and, and minus for not. (Getthe category numbers from the category listing. Not at all convenient, so just do it.

Query builder Taxonomy field. This field, to me, is misnamed. Basically it seems to retrieve my entering taxonomy name:taxonomy item. In my case the taxonomy is category, and the items are the items in the taxonomy. ie category:rolemodel or cat:1 if i is the id for rolemodel.

Query field at the lower part of the form. Apparently nearly any kind of query can be entered here. But, in my reading of the notes, it overrides the wordpress queries, and that likely means some protections, and I have a feeling that thisfield should not be used without a great deal more knowledge than I have. I plan to stick to the taxonomies field and work with its indiosyncracy’s.

New menu – Keep It Simple!

DiyAging new menu ideas. Make the top menu be what I had under categories. Ie I want the items showing to be the ones of interest, not a general, unthinking heading, where you have to click to find the interesting. This throws a normal hiearchy on its head

1. Throw away the ap macro menu. If I do it this way the menu itself should handle everything – and write within the vantage theme.
2. Re order the menu. Maybe a drag operation?
3. Get a color pallet – and use it.
4.

Site requirements
simple heading with logo, name, search and affirmation
Menu with drop down
Home page with posts listed in three colums and each category with a category heading. Most recent, and limited to about 12 posts per category. Possibly a sticky post which describes the category as the first post in each category.

Responsive tabs

Mega menu – Currently I’m trying ap mega menu as the way to show all the stuff. But, I’m having very slow response. The ngoal today, monday, is to simply clean everything up.
Note after installing and putting in a bunch of tabs.
The way it works: The tabs are listed across the top. Pressing a tab opens the content provided within the tab cantent. It DOES NOT allow a link to a page. The pro version allows the tab itself to link directly to a page. I wanted the tab to open the explanatory information AND link to a page. Yet again, a plug in that looks good asnd doeswn’t do what I want. The content field for the page may be more powerful than I think. Like it could have short code(maybeA) that would open upo the page within the field. But, this just doesn’t feel like a good way to do it.

Another way to try – Just add a new menu. I did. Then found that the vantage theme only supports one menu so multiple menus is not a possibilty

After trying circle icons, sliders, etc, I am now thinking this responsive tabs plug in might make the “user experience” I am looking for,
The way it works, from what I’ve found so far:
1 download, install, and activate
2. tab sets – A tab set is a set of tabs, with explanatory text and image showing up when the tab is pressed. The tab set includes all the tabs you want, which are set in the tabset plug in.
3. There is short code provided, which is copied and pasted into a text area.
4. The entoire tab set is displayed where text otherwise would be displayed.
5. NOTE, a tab set includes all the tabs and has only one ID. (Initially, I was not clear about this.)

Call to action -def. image menu dual row with circle icon – slider?

I have been using the “call to action” button somewhat wrongly. In searching for plugins, most of them are designed to have a user sign up for a email list, or something. Really, a call to action.
I’m looking more for a design element, with a link to a major category. A picturesque menu
The circle icon sort of works. But, the circle gives an icon, a title below, some text, and the whole thing linkable. But, way to spread out.

Try menu imge plugin – it has not been tested with this version. I installed and activated, but the image add did not show up. I made a new “User Menu” and then went to the menu management page. Turns out only one menu can be installed on vantage, so the only option was to choose which the main menu or the user menu to sho on the masthead.
So, this method is not possible.
Back to the image icon, circle methods
Try two rows subdived the same. Put circle icon or image in top, and text in lower and make both clickable.

Maybe the wayis to use a slider with image, major topic, a little text, and clickable with main ones first in the sequencing.

Criteria for the front page

This is a post to try out the “write-it” posting routine. It’s what the general public would see. I just uploaded a space image. Where will it show?

I’m trying to get the vantage theme “call to action” button to work right. So far I can’t get it formated as a circle.
My current thought is to have no sidebar, and to have affirmations on a under masthead line – or the footer. I’m trying abunch of “call to action” buttons, hopefully ones that would pique a users interestr. The front page will be the page with all the recent posts – the post loop, with the buttons above. If say a Hero button is pressed, then The page will load and look just like the front page (in fact it will be duplicated) with the exception that the post loop would show only categories.

***************

Categories, tags and types

I have found little information really defining and explaining categories, tags and types.
Here’s a summary odf what I’ve learned – and more im[portantly, what I don’t yet know.
Tidbits to follow:
1. For simplicity in using multiple widgets, familairity of users, etc stick with categories and tags, and no specail types (Taxonimise)
2, for website development posts use private vs public. In the posts area, above the filter row, you can choose to see just the private, the published, etc.
1. Categories
This is a built in type. A category can have a parent, hence a hiearchial structure. You add a category or categories to a post using the list of categories in the sidebar. Each categotry has an ID which you can find in the url when you display a category. In retrieval, sometimes theId is reccomended over the name. Don’t know why.
When making a retrieval you can include the categories desired, but I have not seen a way to exclude a category.
a. Questions
1). When you code a category to a post, if you code a child category, when you retrieve the parent does it include the child? Or do you need to assign both the parent and child toa post???
2. Can you exclude a category upon retrieval.
3) in the querey builder section of pagebuilder, what is the distinction between the taxonomyfield and the additional criteria field. criteria, after following the link, sounds like it over rides wordpress queries and shouldn’t be used. In the taxonomy field, typing the first few letters prings up a taxonomy:item which can be choses. Is the first section thetype,
4) Are category and tags two build in Types (ie taxonomy names)
5. Making a new type is easy, but the type and term combo doesn’t show up inthe query, and the terms did not stay on the side bar.
6. The side bar for making a post has boxes for categorys and the expanded list (no way to close the child entries, tags with a option to list most used, but no option to see all tags, and it includes an option to add a tag. Or does add mean to add tags from memory or new creation to the post. (Note when adding tags in the field, they are listed beloc with a x in front which means delete this tag when clicked
7 is there a way to see a list of tags? (try the tags entry under add new

May 2, 17 , 2017- next steps.

Sketch the wizard- my rough face, but wizardly name lalagom
Redo the category and tag list
A. Categories and front pages
1. Make a list of categories to display on the front page. Use the circle icon.
Cat name slug ID

2. Make a page with all the categories desired across the top
3. Duplicate this page for each category and name it as such.

4 The post loop row would be tailered to the name of the page

5. The real home page would shop all posts – except development.

When a user presses the call to action, the new page, which looks like the original page – exept the post loop will show only those of the call to action name.

B. Determine the color scheme for the site.
aite background
site text
Button background
Button text

.
C. Edit all the affirmations
D. Make a image library.
a Header icon – as is but a little larger.
b Organize the images
Page icons and images
c. Post images – title by post title.

,,,,,,,, showing all the post images sequentially – clickable???
