Meeting, sort of!
I met Jerry Andrus, illusionist, tinkerer, and magician, at the local DaVinci Day’s Art, Science and Technology festival sometime in the ’90s decade. My hands-on science exhibit for kids and Jerry ‘s much more elaborate and comprehensive exhibit of puzzles and illusions for kids of all ages were near each other.
Puzzles and Illusions
I occasionally walked over to his exhibit and tried to solve a puzzle or two, or stare at his spiral circle till everyone looked wavy, or get in line with the kids to stand in some sort of whirlygig which at this time I don’t remember what sensations, what illusions, it created. Continue reading
A few years ago, on one of our “slow” trips, we made a side excursion to Sante Fe, NM to visit the Georgia O’Keeffe art gallery. We were, of course aware of some of her art work, for instance the public’s’ interpretation of her flowers as a feminine graphical metaphor. We were not aware of the breath and depth of her work, of her bold, long and active aging well life, nor of her unique vision being able to simplify nature and to capture the feeling of a person or place with colors and shapes, foregoing the more absolute realism approach common in her era.
She definitely is a example of a person living a long, productive and active life and able to overcome obstacles, often converting them to opportunities.
She lived to 98 and even in her last years, with macro degeneration, and almost blind, she continued, with help, painting.
If you are ever in the Sante Fe area we highly recommend taking a day and visiting the Georgia O’Keefe museum. We took the docents tour. Our amiable guide, Jerry, tall, and taller still with his western hat, told story after story about Georgia, her paintings, her life, and some of the symbolism. He’s been doing these tours for twenty years. Another example of a active, optimistic aging person!
