Here’s some information concerning scams targeted to conscientious seniors. Scammers gain enough information about you to seem real – and ask for more under various guises.
This article from Senior Planet explains the techniques and what to do:
My take:
1. Listen long enough to determine the organization calling. If anything seems suspicious, ie no reason to call, asking for additional information, etc, then:
2. Hangup with absolutely no info given. Courtesy is not needed. Complete silence is probably best.
3 Call the organization with your own contact list information (not a number they give you) just in case it’s legit (unlikely) and explain the call. They need to know that there may be a span situation under their name, and if it really was from them explain to them why their call seemed like spam and suggest they change procedures. If it’s a legitimate company they will appreciate your efforts – if they are irritated, I’d do no more business with them.
5. Report the call
